MARCH 2008

With the awkward closure of the seafront in torquay the elephant is trying to give something back to our hospitality colleagues. Throughout March and April we will be offering a 25% food discount in the room to all staff in the hospitality industry and 2 for 1 on our lunch menu in the brasserie and 25% off our brasserie dinner menu. The deal runs from tuesday to thursday and is on food only. Proof of employment in the hospitality industry must be provided and reservations booked in advance. see you all soon.

FEBRUARY 2008

After a long journey to excel in west london the elephants team of chefs have come away with 3 gold medals and a silver medal in Britains biggest culinary competition hotelympia. Dan and Pete won the team challenge for the 3rd year running . Dan is turning into our own Steve Redgrave. Chris also took gold in the pasta class and Simon was part of the British team of chefs practising for the culinary olympics in Germany later this year took a silver medal. No gold was awarded. So once again Torquay has proved its self as a culinary destination to the rest of the country. well done lads.

 

JANUARY 2008

The new year has started with a bang and confirmation of the elephant reestaurant retaining for the 3rd year its michelin star. our brasserie restaurant was also listed in the red guide so we are more than happy.

 

NOVEMBER 2007

Daniel has just returned from Birmingham with another fantastic award . After competing for 2 hours in front of some of the countries finest chefs, Daniel was unamiously awarded the title of British Culinary Federation young chef of the year. Daniel now has trips to Venice and Luxembourg as part of his prize and also a nice bit of cash and a new set of knives. A second part of the prize which was announced on the evening is that Daniels win has catapulted him into the world of international competitoins and he will now represent Great Britain in the Junior World Chef Finals in Dubai next May, if he wins the Ramsay scholarship i dont think we will see him for the whole of 2008. well done Dan.

 

OCTOBER 2007

Daniel Morris our second chef at the Elephant has been awarded a place in the semi finals of the Gordon Ramsay scholarship Daniel who competed in last years competiton also is hoping to go one step further this time and reach the final. Good luck Dan.

OCTOBER 2007

Chef and manager Simon Hulstone has been chosen to represent Great Britain in the Global Chefs Championships held in Talinn Estonia at the end of this month. Taking with him a wealth of competition experience Simon will compete against 16 other nationalities to be crowned European Chef of the year and this will hopefully take him to Dubai in 2008 to compete against the other 4 continents for the title of Global Chef. This is a massive competition and one we are justifiably proud of supporting Simon in. Fingers crossed for Estonia. 

 

SEPTEMBER 2007

Another month and another award. This time from the AA . The Elephant was once again a recipient of their 3 Rosette award which we have held for the last year.

AUGUST 2007

The Good Food Guide 2008 was released this month and the Elephant moved up 2 points to a fabulous 6 out of 10 beating restaurants from all round the country such as Gordon Ramsays Claridges and Marco Pierre Whites Mirabelle restaurants. The Elephant was the only restaurant listed within torbay and was only topped in the whole of Devon by Michael Caines fantastic hotel and restaurant Gidleigh Park who achieved 7 out of 10.

 

MARCH 2007

We are pleased to annonce that from Tuesday April 3rd our second restaurant will be officially opening.

Named The Room in The Elephant, it will be a showpiece restaurant for our multi award winning cuisine.  Opening evenings only and using the finest local produce cooked by our Head Chef Simon Hulstone to our very high standards. 

The Room in The Elephant will be situated on the first floor and has views across the bay.

Our downstairs restaurant will also have a makeover and will become somewhat more relaxed serving fantastic simple brasserie dishes at affordable prices. So we now have two fabulous restaurants under one roof the only problem now is which one should you dine in?

 

JANUARY 2007

The Elephant has suceeded in retaining their coveted Michelin Star award for the second year. This is a fantastic achievement and Simon and his team are overjoyed . The Elephant is now the only restaurant in torbay and only one of 4 in Devon who have achieved Michelin recognition.

Sous Chef Ryan Simpson and Chef de Partie Daniel Morris have walked away with gold at this year's British Cookery Championships in Birmingham. Competing in a cook off in front of a live audience Ryan and Daniel wowed the judges with their 3 course menu served in 75 minutes. Well done lads and keep up the great work. 

 

SEPTEMBER 2006

Our Head Chef Simon was asked this week to compete in the semi finals of the National Chef of the Year competition held at the Restaurant show.(18-20 September). The National Chef of the Year has previously been won by some of the best chefs in the world today including Gordon Ramsay, David Everitt Matthias and Kevin Viner. After winning his heat Simon had to compete in the grand final on the wednersday morning cooking a 3 course meal from a mystery box of ingredients. After hours of cooking and deliberating Simon was awarded third prize which in its self is fantastic given the such short notice. The Elephant is rightly proud to have Simon and we wish him even more sucess.

The Elephant now has three AA Rosettes to add to the Michelin star already awarded for 2006.

If you happen to be in Plymouth on 20th August you can catch Simon doing a demonstration at the Flavour Festival with the Tanner Brothers.
